Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation helps patients relax during dental procedures while remaining aware and able to respond to the dentist’s instructions.

Types of Conscious Sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas): The patient inhales a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a nasal mask, inducing a sense of relaxation.
  • Oral Sedation: The patient takes a prescribed medication about an hour before the procedure, inducing a state of relaxation.

We offer conscious sedation for patients who experience anxiety, fear, or discomfort during dental procedures. We also recommend it for patients with a pronounced gag reflex, specific medical needs, or for complex and lengthy dental procedures.

Safety

At Oliveira Dental Clinic, we have qualified dentists trained in conscious sedation, and they are responsible for administering and monitoring these techniques. Rigorous safety procedures are followed to minimize risks and ensure patient safety.

Awareness

Although patients remain conscious during sedation, they may be in a state of deep relaxation and have an altered perception of time. They can respond to the dentist’s instructions, but they will often remember very little of the procedure.

Benefits

Conscious sedation can make dental procedures more comfortable and less stressful for patients, which can encourage people who avoid dental care due to anxiety to get the care they need.

Side Effects

Temporary light drowsiness, nausea, or headaches.

It is important to discuss sedation options with your dentist to determine the most appropriate method for your needs and concerns.
