Dental Exam

A comprehensive dental exam is a thorough evaluation of a patient’s oral health. It involves a detailed examination of the mouth, teeth, gums, and surrounding structures.

Why a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is crucial for preventing and managing oral health issues. It helps maintain a healthy mouth, prevent pain, and detect serious problems early. The exam is performed by a dentist and is often done during a teeth cleaning by a dental hygienist.

Types of Exams:

  • Complete Exam: Typically performed during your first visit. It is recommended every 5 years.
  • Recall Exam: Recommended every 6 months, though the dentist might suggest a different frequency based on your condition.

At Oliveira Dental Clinic, a comprehensive dental exam includes:

Medical and Dental History

Your dentist will gather information about your medical and dental history, including any allergies, medications, and health concerns. They will discuss your current dental needs, hygiene habits, aesthetic expectations, and other relevant details.

Visual Inspection and Palpation

Your dentist will visually inspect your mouth for signs of dental problems or gum disease, such as discoloration, cavities, stains, cracks, bleeding gums, or inflammation. They will also palpate the head and neck area to detect any abnormalities or swelling related to dental or overall health issues.

X-Rays

Dental x-rays, such as intraoral or panoramic x-rays, provide a detailed view of the inside of your teeth and jaws. They help detect problems below the surface, like interproximal cavities, infections, or issues with tooth alignment.

Intraoral and Extraoral Photos

Photos taken inside and outside the mouth help examine the details of your teeth, gums, and face. At Oliveira Dental Clinic, these photos are essential for completing the diagnosis and planning personalized treatment options.

Preliminary Gum Examination

Your dentist will check the condition of your gums using special tools to measure the depth of gum pockets, which can reveal signs of gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis. If necessary, a complete periodontal exam will be scheduled.

Periodontal disease treatment

Tooth Examination

Each tooth is inspected individually for cavities, fractures, cracks, defective restorations, or signs of excessive wear.

Occlusion Evaluation

The dentist will check how your upper and lower teeth align to identify any occlusion problems that might require treatment, such as orthodontics.

Recommendations and Treatment Plan

After the exam, your dentist will discuss the results, potential issues, and treatment recommendations. A personalized dental care plan will be created, and if needed, you will meet with our treatment coordinator to discuss financing options.
