Fixed Dental Bridge or Conventional Bridge

A fixed dental bridge, also known as a dental bridge, is a prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. This type of prosthesis can be anchored either on natural teeth or dental implants. When anchored on natural teeth, the bridge is firmly held in place by the adjacent teeth on either side of the edentulous space. It is permanently installed and cannot be removed by the patient.

The fixed dental bridge generally consists of an artificial tooth (called a pontic) placed between two dental crowns, which are themselves fitted onto the abutment teeth. It is primarily made of ceramic or porcelain, offering a natural and aesthetic appearance.

Process of Placing a Fixed Dental Bridge

  • Initial Evaluation

During the first consultation, the dentist assesses the condition of your missing teeth, discusses your needs, and determines if a dental bridge is the best option for you.

  • Preparation of Abutment Teeth

If the bridge is supported by natural teeth, these teeth are prepared by being slightly shaped to accommodate the crowns that will support the bridge.

  • Taking Impressions

Dental impressions are taken to create an accurate model of the prepared teeth and the edentulous area. This model is then used by a laboratory to fabricate the custom-made bridge.

  • Fabrication of the Bridge

The bridge is made from ceramic or porcelain to match the color, shape, and size of the surrounding natural teeth.

  • Placement of the Bridge

Once the dental bridge is ready, it is secured in place with dental cement. Adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable fit and proper occlusion.

Advantages of Non-Metallic Dental Bridges

Ceramic or porcelain dental bridges offer several advantages, including a more natural appearance as they closely mimic the enamel of natural teeth. They provide an ideal aesthetic solution for replacing missing teeth, especially in visible areas of the mouth where appearance is crucial.

However, to ensure the longevity of the bridge and the health of the surrounding teeth, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and consult your dentist regularly.

Other Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

Other solutions for replacing missing teeth include dental implants or removable dentures. Each option has its own advantages, and the best choice will depend on your specific needs and budget. Your dentist will help you choose the most suitable option for your situation.
