Periodontal Treatment

The goal of your periodontal treatment is to ensure that the gums properly reattach to the cleaned tooth roots and to reduce periodontal pockets to a manageable level for effective at-home care (brushing and flossing). Follow these recommendations to optimize your healing and minimize discomfort.

Oral Care

First 24 Hours:
Avoid using dental floss on the treated teeth. Gently brush the treated area on the first day. The next day, start using dental floss carefully, gradually increasing the pressure until you return to your normal routine by the end of the first week.

Daily Hygiene Routine:
Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: Dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide with water. Use a small brush to gently clean between the teeth and massage the gums. Continue this treatment twice a day for a week.

Rinsing:
After brushing, rinse with the hydrogen peroxide solution or the mouthwash prescribed by your dentist.

Diet

First Day:
Opt for a soft and balanced diet. Chew on the side opposite to the treated area until you can eat normally without discomfort.

Discomfort and Sensitivity:
Pain Relief: Take the prescribed pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed, avoiding aspirin.

Sensitivity:
It is normal to experience increased sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods due to gum shrinkage during healing. This sensitivity should gradually decrease. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help. Avoid “whitening” toothpastes or those containing baking soda.

Healing

After a few days, your gums should start to become pinker, less swollen, and bleed less when flossing. These are positive indicators of healing and improvement in periodontal health. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
